One Year’s Difference

Today I’ve been reflecting on how much difference one year can make in your life.

A year ago, Corey and Justin had both moved back into our house to figure out what they wanted to do with their lives. Corey was in school, and was trying to get his degree after splitting up with his wife.

My first book “The China Cabinet” was in its final stages before publication, and I was working on another project with an esteemed colleague. I’d signed up to present it to the National Dropout Prevention Conference in February 2013.

I was teaching three days a week, and loved my connection with my students. I felt like I was changing lives for the good.

I was looking forward to taking my Grand-baby Trick-or-Treating. The holidays were on their way, and I was excited to spend them with all three boys at home.

In November, “The China Cabinet” was published. The future looked amazing.

Little did I know it wouldn’t last.

December 30th, I had a car accident. I couldn’t work for a month. When I returned, my hours were cut. It put us in financial trouble, so I had to put my writing to the side and find more stable employment. And after breaking my collar bone, it was obvious I needed a job with benefits.

So I didn’t present to the conference in February, instead I was negotiating for a consulting position. In the long run I had to make the hard decision to go back to work full time, and give up teaching the students I was so fond of.

I gave notice on Thursday 7/25/13. Two days later, Corey was murdered.

2013 has turned my world upside down. I feel like I’ve fallen through the looking glass… and there is no returning.

All I can do is continue in this new direction, in hopes that some day I’ll find my way home again.
