Education

As Bob went off to bed, he said, “Remember to pack something for you to eat tomorrow during class.”

It hit me… I start class tomorrow night!

When I taught the “Stay in School” program years ago, I used to say, “You will have many wonderful things in your life. Friends, family, jewelry, a home, a car… whatever your heart desires.

“But all of these things are temporary. Society and all that it entails can take everything. Friends may leave, family too. They can take your home, your car, your jewelry… because you never truly own them. Even parts of your body may fail you…

“There is only one thing no one can ever take from you. That is your education. Because its what you’ve internalized. YOU OWN THIS. And with your education, you can redefine your future after a loss of any of these things.

“So of all the things in life you must fight the hardest for, you must fight for your education.”

I didn’t realize how important this statement would become for me.

Someone took my son. I cannot replace him. I don’t even want to.

But I can redefine myself. And I can change my pain to glory.

Tomorrow I start my second Master’s degree. This time in Fundraising.

I can use my pain as motivation to start something new. And in the process, raise my son’s name above my own… for all the world to see.
