The Butt Factory

When Corey was in Kindergarten, I was forced to realize how bad his communication disability was. When you would ask him how old he was, he’d say, “Corey”. When you’d ask him his name, he’d say, “Six.”

Thank God that his school was able to help get him diagnosed, and help him get back on track quickly. However, right around Christmas time I began to question their teaching practices… and the influence they were having on my son.

Let me explain. We were driving along one day when Corey began to sing:

“Hi! My name is Joe, and I work in a BUTT factory. I have a LIFE and FREE kids! And all day long, I do this…” I looked in the rearview mirror and he was making a pushing motion with his right hand. Then he repeated the verse, “Hi! My name is Joe, and I work in a BUTT factory. I have a LIFE and FREE kids! And all day long I do this…” and began pushing with the left hand in rhythm with the right.

I began to wonder, “What on EARTH are they teaching my son? A BUTT factory?? A LIFE with FREE kids?? This is starting to sound like a Jerry Springer episode!!”

I didn’t mention it to Corey, because I wasn’t wanting cause any conflict between the school and us. So instead I waited for the Christmas program so I could speak to the music teacher.

Then when I took my seat, I saw, “My name is Joe” was a song on the program. At last, we were going to get to the bottom of this!!

The children took their places, and began singing. Finally, after half of the program the moment of truth; the children began to sing.

“Hi! My name is Joe, and I work in a BUTTON factory! I have a WIFE and THREE kids, and all day long I do this!” The entire class started making a pushing motion with their right hand. NOW it made sense!

What a relief!
