I lit a candle tonight…

Corey,
I lit a candle for you just now… in hopes that you would come home for Christmas. I understand if you can’t be here, but if you can just let me know you’re thinking of us… I’d be satisfied.

We each opened a gift tonight… just like we used to when you were little. I wonder what gift you’d have chosen from the pile gathered there. Practical, personal, or something unexpected?

Or would you go around and weigh every package, shake them, measuring to see what you thought they contained? Then after your scientific evaluations (which would frustrate your brothers) finally open the one package you couldn’t figure out.

Tomorrow we will open our gifts at the crack of… well, with your brothers being older now… probably noon. We’ll eat a brunch of sausage gravy and biscuits. Everyone will take a nap. Then on to see your brothers, sisters, niece and nephew on Bob’s side.

To me, though, it still eats at the back of my mind that this will mark 17 months since you were murdered. It’s the second Christmas we’ve spent without you.

You should be here.

With your family.

And since you can’t be here, at the very least, you should be given justice. If I had a present for you this year, this would be what I’d give you.

I love you Corey.
