Olives
Month 28:
Yesterday morning I received a mysterious text from my niece. It said:
“Quick! Let’s throw olives at each other and try to catch them in our mouths while our moms aren’t looking!”
I was confused, because she’s well into her late 20’s… so I asked her if her children were playing this game.
She answered with a resounding “Nope!” and explained it was a game she and Corey used to play when she was at our home for Thanksgiving.
That explains why I’d find so many olives under the table when company would leave! And why Corey was so eager to help clean them up! But even if I’d have caught them, I’d probably have laughed with them.
Such a beautiful memory.
An inside joke they shared.
One made at my dining room table.
One created among all of my china,
silver, and cloth napkins.
A memory for cousins…
I haven’t brought out my china and fanfare since Corey died. He always helped me decorate the table.
That was our “thing”.
I think I’ll bring it out for Christmas.
My grandchildren deserve the chance to make some memories at my dining room table too.
But I’m going to keep my eye on the olives!
