A promise from the past

I opened the card to look at the signature because I didn’t recognize the name on the envelope.

When I read the signature, I was shocked to be hearing from someone from so long ago… and I was swept away to a warm summer night 31 years ago…

I remember being on my parent’s land in Harrisonville, Mo. There was a group of about 15 of us gathered around the bonfire. That night (as the host of the gathering) it was my turn to share my testimony and any other message that God laid on my heart.

I remember talking about a mass shooting in a McDonald’s which had happened just days before. The message was that you never know when it will be your turn to leave this world, and to prepare yourself for Heaven before it’s too late.

I know it was a deep thought for a group of teenagers attending a Youth for Christ bonfire. But it was on my heart.

I remember my friend Karla crying when I was done. I asked her if she was ok, and she said “No.”

She asked me to pray with her to accept Christ that night.

Two 17 year old girls, kneeling in the grass… away from the group so we could have some privacy. The darkest of night, stars shining high above us.

Praying for God’s forgiveness.
Praying for Him to hold our hands as we go through life.
Praying for Faith.
Praying for Karla… as she accepted Christ.

As I read the unfamiliar name on the envelope, and skipped to the end of the note it all became clear to me.

She told me she had been praying for me from the moment she found out that Corey had been murdered.

She felt as if she needed to let me know that I was loved and prayed for every day.

A reminder of God’s love for me… 31 years in the making!

Love always, Karla.
